How to catch Brook Trout in Ontario

Brook Trout

Ontario's native 'speckled' trout — a jewel of cold, clean water, and one of the most beautiful fish that swims.

When to fish

Spring and fall, in cold water. Brookies fade in summer heat and seek out the coldest water they can find.

Where to find them

Spring-fed lakes, cold streams, undercut banks, and around cold inflows. Northern Ontario is full of them.

How to catch them

Small spinners, spoons, flies, and worms on light tackle. Keep presentations small and natural.

Gear

Ultralight spinning with 2–4 lb line, or a light fly setup for streams.

Pro tip

Stealth wins — brook trout spook easily in clear water. Approach low, cast long, and fish small.
