How to catch Rainbow Trout / Steelhead in Ontario

Rainbow Trout / Steelhead

Lake-run rainbows — steelhead — are Ontario's hardest-running freshwater fish, and stocked rainbows put up a great fight too.

When to fish

Steelhead run the tributaries in spring and fall; stocked lake rainbows fish best in cool spring water.

Where to find them

River runs, pools, and tailouts during the runs, around tributary mouths, and in stocked lakes.

How to catch them

Drift roe bags or beads and float-fish the rivers; spinners, spoons, and flies also produce. Light presentations in clear, cold flows.

Gear

A long float rod shines on rivers; light spinning works in lakes. Fluorocarbon leaders in clear water.

Pro tip

Read the water — steelhead hold in seams, current breaks, and the soft tailouts of pools. Downsize when it's cold and clear.
